SJT Friday Fact (Thanks, DM)
At the Democratic State Convention in NYC, Tilden gave us the following statement that speaks directly to my fear of a Romney administration:
A complete and harmonious restoration of the revolted States would have been effected if the Republican party had not proved to be totally incapable of acting in the case with any large, wise, or firm statesmanship.
SJT’s 1868 New York State Democratic Convention speech has some of the most impressive conservative language (of course, it’s also important to remember that the Republican Party was in love with Big Government during this era).

If you like “A Christmas Story,” I recommend this, also by Jean Shepherd.
I fear the part about the Personal Property Tax, and the auction of the neighbor’s belongings.
