James K Polk “fun” fact: He was a decent chess
player and every Saturday he held mini chess
tournaments in the White House.

From Mike:

At Saturday night’s Restoring Love, during the commercials and Raj’s interview outside the stadium, just prior to Glenn’s opening video they played the following song, which got most of the crowd on their feet, many clapping and singing along to the music. So without further ado, here is the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Friends from their 1989 album “Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Volume 2” (Pardon the video/audio sync issues, it was the only copy of the music video I could find)

July 25, 2012

Dammit.

How much is enough?

Most of my neighborhood is crap.  The house to my left has been empty for over a year, when it was repossessed.  The last scum tenant had been paying the landlord for six months, during which IT HAD ALREADY BEEN IN BANK CUSTODY; the landlord is scum.  The previous three tenants were trash.

The house to my right will be vacant soon;  the one leaving is the lady who said “You have some nice things here.  Is your house hard to break into?  Do you have an alarm? Can you get upstairs to the bedrooms quietly?”

The house on the other side of her is a drug house.  Their plumbing is leaking so much, raw sewage is going into the side yard.   The city’s response?  “Don’t let kids play in the side yard.”  They have a family of raccoons living under the front porch, which come out at night & early morning, and dump out the garbage cans.  Two neighbor’s dogs have died from kidney failure, from bacterial infection from either the sewage or more likely, the raccoons washing their food in the standing water.

Luckily so far, it hasn’t come as far as my house (doesn’t need to), so I’m praying Ike is safe.  I told the neighbors to be ready for a gunshot, in case it does come down.

One of the few neighbors who is trying to work for a living came to me this morning, asking if I had an old battery for his car, and any scrap metal. He’s trying to 1.  look for a job after getting laid off,  2. get to his lawyers, to try to see his kid whom he hasn’t seen for three months, since his drug addict wife won’t bring him to her (the last time he saw the kid, he waved at his dad’s car from outside the rehab clinic).  He has a bunch of problems of his own, but at least HE’S trying to get past them, and get his life straight.  But I also have a good ear for B.S., which was half of what he was feeding me.

I gave him about forty pounds of aluminum cans I’d been saving for months; I have a car battery at work I’ll see if he can charge, or trade in for a different one.

I wish life could go back to normal.  I want old neighborhoods, where you can dangle a coffecup from your fingers as an invitation, instead of as a signal that the heroin has been cooked.

SJTF UNMASKED!
Like any modern presidential candidate, SJT was not universally
loved or respected. In fact, he had enemies launching smear
campaigns in attempt to railroad his election, even before
he received the Democratic Party nomination.

The following quote is from a political book written by a
disgruntled investor and discharged NYC police sergeant,
Benjamin Buckman. Buckman believed Tilden and some of
his associates purposely destroyed his investment:

“To my surprise, I found that I was in almost daily intercourse
with other persons who had known him intimately for a score
of years, or more, and who did not hesitate to pronounce him
a most unscrupulous knave, despite his reputation and riches.
Through them I obtained access to newspaper slips, and to
other documents relating to him, which I examined until
convinced that they were right in their estimate of Tilden’s
true character”

For Those On The Road to Restoring Love

O God, Who did cause the children of Israel to traverse the Red Sea dryshod; Thou Who did point out by a star to the Magi the road that led them to Thee; grant us we beseech Thee, a prosperous journey and propitious weather; so that, under the guidance of Thy holy angels we may safely reach that journey’s end, and later the haven of eternal salvation.

Fear.

Three weeks ago, the neighbor’s dog next to us died of kidney failure, from a bacterial infection (from raccoon under the house next to them?)

Our good neighbors across the street are in tears, because on Monday they are putting Dottie down for the same reason.

We lost our first dog, Patrick, from kidney failure.

God, please watch over and protect our Ike.

SJTF Fact:

SJT and “The Unscientific and Ill-adjusted Methods of Taxation”

During the Civil War the Federal Government instituted a
progressive income tax to help offset the war debt.
Anyone with an income of $600-10,000 paid 3% and
those who earned over $10,000 paid 5%. SJT, and others
who favored limited government feared that taxation only
increased the strength and centralization of federal power,
and such a tax would never go away.

The following excerpt is long but well worth reading:

The present depression in all the business and industries of
the people… has its principal cause in excessive
governmental consumption. Under the illusions of a
specious prosperity, engendered by the false policies of the
Federal government, a waste of capital has been going on
ever since the peace of 1865, which could only end in
universal disaster. The Federal taxes of the last eleven years
reach the gigantic sum of $4,500,000,000. Local taxation
has amounted to two-thirds as much more. The vast
aggregate is not less than $7,500,000,000 … It was
aggravated by the most unscientific and ill-adjusted
methods of taxation, that increased the sacrifices of the
people far beyond the receipts of the treasury. It was
aggravated, moreover, by a financial policy which tended to
diminish the energy, skill, and economy of production and
the frugality of private consumption, and induced
miscalculation in business and an unremunerative use of
capital and labor. Even in prosperous times, the daily wants
of industrious communities press closely upon their daily
earnings. The margin of possible national savings is at least
a small percentage of national earnings. Yet now for these
eleven years governmental consumption has been a larger
portion of the national earnings than the whole people can
possibly save, even in prosperous times, for all new
investments. The consequences of these errors are now a
present public calamity. But they never were doubtful,
never invisible. They were necessary and inevitable, and
were foreseen and depicted when the waves of that
fictitious prosperity ran highest. In a speech made by me
on the 24th of September, 1869, it was said of these taxes,
“They bear heavily upon every man’s income, upon every
industry and every business in the country; and year by
year they are destined to press still more heavily, unless
we arrest the system that gives rise to them.

The Inspiration of the Declaration,Calvin Coolidge (from BurrNY)

“It is often asserted that the world has made a great deal of progress since 1776, that we
have had new thoughts and new experiences which have given us a great advance over
the people of that day, and that we may therefore very well discard their conclusions for
something more modern. But that reasoning can not be applied to this great charter. If
all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that
is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is
final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions.”

At the in-laws tonight.

Mother-in-law is still in love with Biden.

Talking with father in law in kitchen; he’s always said he’s independent, but has almost always swung left (even though he says his best vote was for Eisenhower).

He doesn’t trust either candidate.

After discussing Obamacare, he whispers, “you know what this is?  it’s Socialism!”

And later: “Change.  Why do we need all this change.  Why don’t they just leave us alone?  You know what I think?  I think this country is headed for a revolution.  And I think it’s going to be a bloody one.  And it’s going to be the people against the government, not the people against each other.”

From Judy’s Blog: A Quote From Someone Who Understands Abuse

SJTF!

SJTF and the Ongoing Battle for Independence

The following is just a paragraph from a
speech Tilden gave in New York, not long
after the Civil War. The last last few lines
summarize the feelings many of us have about
America now:

Fellow-citizens, it is for us at this election
to determine what that destiny shall be.
I know that there is great danger and
great peril if we fail now. I am not
willing to take the risk of the future;
and so far as I am concerned, I am
surrendering to the cause nearly all
my time and all my effort, and I
invoke of you, every man, to be a
minute-man for the cause of your
country. I remember when I was a
boy I had an uncle who fought all
through the war of our Revolution.
He entered the continental army at
about sixteen or seventeen; and the
old man when his hairs were gray
with many winters and the decline
of life was upon him, said to us one
day: “I felt during all those eight years
as if the whole continental cause
rested on my shoulders.” That is the
spirit of the men of the Revolution.
That is the spirit which made us a
nation and which gave us our independence.
That is the spirit which inaugurated
this happy system of government.
That is the spirit which is needed now,
and which, if manifested in this contest,
will redeem us, and restore us to all
those great hopes which we once entertained.

July 4, 2012

July 4th, 2012

I had originally typed out a long prose to post today, to celebrate our nation’s birth.  But I would also have to write about it’s destruction.  Freedom is only a hollow word, without the ability to exercise it…freely.

I’ll spare my depressing view, and offer this instead, for encouragement.

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps;
His day is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His day is marching on.

I have read a fiery Gospel writ in burnished rows of steel;
“As ye deal with My contemners, so with you My grace shall deal”;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,
Since God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Since God is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet;
Our God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free
While God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While God is marching on.

He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is wisdom to the mighty, He is honor to the brave;
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of wrong His slave,
Our God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

Mark Levin Analyzes SCOTUS Ruling Weezy

SJTF Fact (Thanks, DM)

The following picture is a great illustration of Tilden’s situation. He was a Democrat with decades of strong Party affiliation (Democrats ruled the South in those days) but spent his entire life in the North and maintained many Union sympathies. In order to win, not just the party nomination but the presidential election, SJT had to find a middle ground amongst a still fractured Union and an occupied South.

It has also been said that Tilden didn’t fight for the disputed electoral votes – he spent over a month preparing a complete history on how Congress has been responsible for vote counts, not the President of the Senate, instead of trying to manipulate the politicians involved in the selection process. Thomas Nast, the artist (who drew many anti-Tilden pictures for “Harper’s Weekly”), portrayed Tilden as a weak and scared man, unable to stand up to either faction.
